weeks since the shooting happened at sandy hook elementary school. and in that killed 20 young children and six duments. a candlelight vigil was held all day long in newtown. 26 candles were lit monday at midnight. volunteers spent three hours in shifts making sure those candles stayed lit and remained burning. many people are now turning to their faith to help get them through this difficult time. >> as we feel our hearts are broken in 26 little pieces, but it's the birth of jesus and we find strength in that, and so we're mourning, but we're also thinking of god at this time, that he'll give us the strength of his son. >> police officers from neighbors communities filled in in newtown for police there so those men and women could have the holiday off. >>> people all over the nation kement the survivors and the victims of the sandy hook shooting in their minds, the youngest victims of the school shooting are being remembered in the nation's capital. 20 child-like angels adoshed the altar inside the children's chapel at the washington national cathedral. this happened on christmas day.

, and then have slowly been settling down and that was mostly because of superstorm sandy. so today with the level at this more palatable sort of level at 350,000 the big question is will today be just a blip or will this be the beginning of a trend, and that's what you really want to see. you want to see the level of layoffs continuing to at least stay the same and obviously you want to see them come down but at the same time you also want to see hiring happening and that's where that government jobs report that we focus on once a month, that's where that comes into play. we're going to get the next one next week, that government jobs report and the big worry, carol, that's hanging over all of this is the fiscal cliff. although we're still in the middle of wondering what congress is going to do about it, companies are already holding back hiring so that is clearly impacting the jobs market but the good news once again is the layoffs are slowing, down 12,000 to 350,000 last week. carol? >> thank you very much, washington. alison kosik thank you so much. >>> growing outrage over the decision of a n
for sandy, that's part of the discretionary spending. >> and part of this is a snowball, right, so the cuts take place, they have their effect but they dampen consumer confidence. >> that's right. >> people are less confident, they spend less and hurts the economy more. >> if you look at what happened last year with the debt wrangling in august of 2011, consumer confidence dipped 30% and that was without the worry over tax hikes. >> even if it's not clear exactly what's going to happen in the fiscal cliff i'm hearing from retailers, they're saying we're feeling this. holiday sales were dampened by it, what happened next year as far as business hiring could be dampened as well. >> retail stocks are down. the stock market has been jittery and business is extremely worried. >> any silver lining at all? some good news? >> one silver lining if we go over the cliff it's possible that will create a political reset that will change the terms of debate and really focus things and get a deal done fingers crossed. >> part of that deal also another thing i hear from businesses
, superstorm sandy. they do not think it was consumers fear got as much as it was on the drops of the markets in the middle east. back to you. lori: i think they did more online also. joining us now is founder and resident of sica wealth management. this is what i am thinking about with this disappointing sales. it is so difficult for the federal government. people are wary of all of the uncertainty. they are keeping their pocketbooks closed during this all-important spending season. do you see that as an interesting perspective? >> i think at this point, here you have this santa claus rally which is a market phenomenon that makes sense until it doesn't. that works until it doesn't. coming into this season we would have a typical 1.7% increase in the s&p 500. now, we are dealing with questions that will remain unanswered until january. that uncertainty makes investors anxious. tracy: we have for trading days left. what should we be doing? what should people be doing over the course of the next couple trading days? >> i think people should really look at their capital gains. we are at a point
events may have, of course, pushed consumers to spend less this season including hurricane sandy and concerns about how tax hikes from the fiscal cliff could impact their wallets. joining us for more on the numbers is michael mcnamara of mastercard advisers. great to have you with us. many analysts, retailers had high hopes for the season. i think it's looking weaker than expected. of course we had hurricane sandy and we're dealing with the fiscal cliff, as well. what do you think the big driver was of these slower growth numbers? >> well, good morning. yes, you hit on two of the big ones. really the season tripped coming out of the starting gate with hurricane sandy. the impact in the northeast and mid-atlantic, both those regions of the country actually had negative holiday seasons for the holiday-related sectors that we track. other areas of the country that were not impacted by significant weather in the southeast, south central, mountain and west, were up 2% to 4% year over year. so really depended on where you were in the country, how but during the holiday season. >> okay.

where public schools allow guns on campus. but in the wake of the shooting at sandy hook, the push is on to add more states to that list. arizona's attorney general wants every school principal or the designee armed. in ohio, applications for one shooting course for teachers are up 20%. arming teachers is a lot like arming airline pilots. simply knowing that someone on campus might be carrying a gun could be enough to stop the bad guys. in 1997, an armed high school vice principal in mississippi did manage to stop a 16-year-old shooter on a rampage. but there was also columbine. 15 people died and the armed security guard on campus and another one nearby could not stop it. >> the nra's blanket call to arm our schools is really nothing more than a distraction. >> reporter: some teachers in utah say they want more gun training. and organizers are already planning another class for the next holiday break. cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> you didn't have any armed teachers when you grew up, did you? >> i did. i had an armed teacher, not a teacher, an officer and a drug sniffing
